Mitch McGary to return to Michigan for sophomore season

Despite his offensive production improving drastically in March, McGary has already decided he will return to Ann Arbor next fall.

Every March, a handful of college prospects really begin to rise up draft boards everywhere with a great showing in the NCAA Tournament. With the Michigan Wolverines headed to the Final Four, freshman forward Mitch McGary has had a chance to do just that.

Despite his strong play in recent weeks, McGary has already decided that he will return to Michigan next season as a sophomore. Here is what he had to say in a recent report from M Live:

“I haven’t even thought about (leaving),” he told MLive.com after practice Tuesday at the Crisler Center. “I don’t have a decision to make -- I’m coming back.”

Through four games in the NCAA Tournament, McGary is averaging 17.5 points and 11.5 rebounds. He scored 11 points and brought down nine boards in Michigan’s most recent win over Florida in the Elite Eight. During the regular season, McGary averaged slightly more than seven and six a night.

The timing of McGary’s decision is a bit odd. The Wolverines are still in the hunt for a national championship, and the declaration deadline for the draft is still pretty far off in the future. At the very least it would seem like the talented freshman would wait until the season is over to make such a definitive statement.

Regardless, McGary’s return to Michigan is big news for the program. Look for the Wolverines to be ranked in the preseason top 25 next fall.
