Teams would be given six weeks to hold 30 practices under the proposed change. Currently, teams are required to squeeze those sessions in a four-week time frame. Since the regular season typically begins during the second week of November, Midnight Madness could begin in the first week of October, replacing its current slot in the middle of the month.
The tradition of Midnight Madness began at Maryland during the Lefty Driesell era. Kentucky was the first school to officially promote the term in 1982. It has since expanded to both men’s and women’s teams at most schools and is often used as a recruiting tool in addition to a celebratory event.
