Mickelson, who was the No. 8 power forward and No. 55 overall player coming out of high school, was originally recruited, and offered a scholarship, by coach Bill Self and the Jayhawks. The Jonesboro, Ark., native decided to remain close to home and spent a full two years in Fayetteville before changing his mind.
The Jayhawks land a 6'10, 245-pounder who has an opportunity to become a force, noted Self:
"I think the redshirt year will be great for him. It will give him the opportunity to get stronger, get confidence and get his game to the point where he can be a serious impact player for us the following year."
Mickelson’s production was nearly identical in his freshman and sophomore years, averaging 5.3 points and 3.6 rebounds per game over the course of the two seasons. Mickelson will sit out the upcoming season and will have two years of eligibility remaining, beginning with the 2014-15 campaign.
