Eli Carter will decide between Florida and Maryland

After being granted his release from Rutgers, Eli Carter now has to decide whether he’ll play for Mark Turgeon or Billy Donovan.

USA TODAY Sports

Eli Carter has narrowed his choices down to the Florida Gators and Maryland Terrapins, the former Rutgers guard announced via Twitter on Friday.

For more on this story, head over to On the Banks, Alligator Army and Testudo Times.

Carter received a release from his scholarship at Rutgers on April 19, becoming the fifth player to transfer out of the program during the fallout of the Mike Rice scandal, which involved the former Scarlet Knights head coach and at least one member of his staff physically and verbally abusing players.

Carter was Rutgers’ leading scorer during the 2012-13 season, averaging 14.9 points per game before suffering a season-ending leg injury on Feb. 16 against DePaul. Carter also led the Scarlet Knights in scoring as a freshman with 13.8 points per contest.

The Gators or Terrapins will have Carter, who may not have to sit out a year because of the nature of his reason for transferring, for two seasons, assuming he doesn’t declare for the NBA draft following his junior campaign.
