John Wooden Award 2013: Michigan’s Trey Burke adds another accolade

The Wolverines’ sophomore guard takes home one of the most distinguished individual college basketball awards.

USA TODAY Sports

Michigan Wolverines sophomore point guard Trey Burke claimed the John R. Wooden Award on Friday, the prestigious honor given to the men's college basketball player of the year.

Burke, already named the 2013 Big Ten Conference Player of the Year, the Associated Press Player of the Year, a Wooden All-American as well as the Most Valuable Player of the South Regional after leading Michigan to the Final Four, adds the Wooden Award to a fast-growing list of accolades for the Columbus, Ohio, native.

As the creative driving force for Michigan's explosive-yet-careful offensive attack, Burke averaged 18.8 points per game and 6.8 assists per contest, with a 3.12 assist-to-turnover ratio that ranks third in the nation. His late-game heroics against the Kansas Jayhawks in the Sweet 16 powered the Wolverines into the Elite Eight, where they walloped the Florida Gators en route to the school's first Final Four appearance since 1993.

Burke and Michigan face the Syracuse Orange in the second Final Four showdown on Saturday night, with tipoff set for 8:49 p.m. ET at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
