Pe’Shon Howard to transfer from Maryland basketball, according to report

After a disappointing junior season, Maryland guard Pe’Shon Howard announced on Monday afternoon he is transferring from the school. Reports surfaced that Howard, a California native, wants to be closer to his sick grandmother.

USA TODAY Sports

On Monday, Maryland back-up guard Pe’Shon Howard announced he would transfer from the school, according to a statement from the university. The new was first shared via the Twitter feed of Washington area sports writer Ben Standig.

Later, ESPN.com’s Andy Katz later added context to Howard’s decision, sharing via his Twitter feed that Howard, a California native, is attempting to transfer closer to his “sick grandmother.”

While it hasn’t been confirmed, it seems likely that Howard will seek an NCAA hardship waiver in hopes to play right away.

Howard leaves Maryland after a disappointing junior season, in which he saw his stats drop across the board, and his playing time decrease from nearly 33 minutes a game to barely 23 during the 2012-2013 campaign. Howard’s best season as a Terrapin came as a sophomore during the 2011-2012 campaign, when he averaged 6.5 points and 3.7 assists.

Howard has yet to announce which schools he is considering.

He will have one year of eligibility remaining.
