Georgetown forward Greg Whittington has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, putting his availability for the 2013-14 season in serious doubt.
Georgetown’s Greg Whittington suffers torn ACL
The Hoyas’ transition into the new Big East conference just got a little bit tougher.

“Greg will return when he is 100 percent healthy,” Georgetown coach John Thompson III said on Tuesday. “I feel for Greg because he’s worked extremely hard to prepare for the coming season, on and off the court. I’m confident this is just another setback that in the end will make him even stronger.”
Whittington averaged 12.1 points and 7.0 rebounds in 2012-13, but played just 13 games before being suspended for academic reasons. Still, he was expected by many to step up and cushion the blow left by the departure of Big East Player of the Year Otto Porter.
The news has, as you might expect, resulted in mass despair over at Casual Hoya.
This injury, coupled with a looming NCAA ruling that will likely limit Josh Smith’s eligibility in blue and gray to either the second semester of the upcoming season OR the full season of the next, could send what is already a fanbase known for its cynicism to levels not seen since Nikita Mesheriakov hit the side of the backboard off of a designed play in the 1st round of a 2009 Big East Tournament against St. John’s and sending the Hoyas into the NIT.
Brace yourselves, Hoyas fans.
Winter is coming.
Georgetown will return starters Markel Starks, Nate Lubick and D’Vaunte Smith-Rivera from a team that won the Big East regular season title but was stunned by Florida Gulf Coast in the NCAA Tournament’s round of 64. The Hoyas will open the 2013-14 season against Oregon on Nov. 8 in the Armed Forces Classic. That game will be played on a to-be-decided army base.
