Kyle Wiltjer to transfer from Kentucky

With a legendary recruiting class on the way, it’s possible the soon-to-be junior forward believes he’ll find better opportunities elsewhere.

USA TODAY Sports

Kentucky Wildcats forward Kyle Wiltjer will look to transfer from the school before his junior year, head coach John Calipari announced Monday through Twitter. "I’m disappointed, but I fully support whatever he chooses," Calipari tweeted.

A 6'10 forward who carved out a solid role on the Wildcats last season, Wiltjer's decision to transfer likely involves the program's upcoming recruiting class. With top forwards like Julius Randle, Dakari Johnson and Marcus Lee joining the team, the rising junior would've been pressed for playing time right from the beginning.

While Wiltjer doesn’t envision a spot in Lexington, it’s likely he’ll receive heavy interest from around the country. As a sophomore, he averaged 10.2 points and 4.2 rebounds per game while flashing an impressive shooting stroke. Taking over four three-pointers per contest, Wiltjer shot 37 percent from beyond the arc.

Among the other top players who starred for Kentucky last season, only Alex Poythress and Willie Cauley-Stein are still on the roster. Nerlens Noel and Archie Goodwin declared for the NBA Draft, which is on Thursday.
