Pac-12, Mountain West announce men’s basketball officiating collaboration

After Ed Rush’s controversial exit, the Pac-12 decided to form an alliance with the Mountain West for the men’s basketball officiating.

The Pac-12 and Mountain West formed an officiating alliance for men’s basketball games, the Pac-12 announced on Friday. Bobby Dibler, a long-time officiating coordinator for the Mountain West and Western Athletic conferences, will oversee the group of officials.

The news comes two months after former Pac-12 head of officials Ed Rush resigned amid allegations of targeting Arizona head coach Sean Miller during the conference’s tournament in March. Rush reportedly bribed officials who were scheduled to work the Wildcats’ meeting against UCLA to either assess a technical foul to Miller or eject him from the game.

The conferences plan to focus on “recruitment, training, evaluation and accountability,” according to the press release. Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott echoed the sentiment:

Our objective is to provide the best officiating program for our teams and student-athletes. Under this new alliance, we will be better positioned to attract top lead officials, and to achieve the greatest consistency and accountability deserving of our excellent basketball programs.

The WAC as well as the West Coast and Big West conferences, will participate in the alliance’s new officiating programs.
