Marshall Henderson suspended for violation of team rules

The checkered career of college basketball’s resident free spirit, Marshall Henderson, has hit another snag: Ole Miss has suspended the senior guard indefinitely for a violation of team rules, per Memphis News reporter Kyle Veazey. Henderson failed a drug test, according to CBS’ Gary Parrish.

Henderson apparently knew about the news before it broke, tweeting with one of his signature hashtags about two hours before Veazey had anything to say:

Henderson took college basketball by storm last year, leading the SEC in scoring with 20.1 points per game. He earned SEC Tournament MVP for guiding the Rebels to their first tournament victory since 1981, pushing them off the bubble and into an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, where they’d upset fifth-seeded Wisconsin.

But he’s never been known to show restraint. On the court, he’s an unabashed gunner, taking more than 10 threes per game. He pretends to smoke... something after shots sometimes. He has been known to have run-ins with fans, notably showing off to Auburn in the GIF of the century, and flipping the crowd the bird after Ole Miss’ tournament loss to La Salle.

And off the court, he’s had even more issues. Ole Miss is his third school, having already transferred out of Utah and Texas Tech, where he never played a game. His Twitter feed is as off-kilter as any athlete’s, college or professional. And most noteworthy, he’s had run-ins with the law. In 2010. he was arrested for trying to purchase marijuana with fake money. And in 2012, his transfer year, he spent 25 days in jail after testing positive for cocaine, marijuana and alcohol, a violation of his probation for that prior arrest.

Deadspin wrote about how Marshall Henderson tends to get away with being Marshall Henderson, but Ole Miss might not be having it anymore. Although we as college basketball fans hope he’ll be back, chucking threes, tweeting and wildly celebrating.
