Michigan extends John Beilein’s contract through 2018-19

John Beilein won’t be leaving Ann Arbor anytime soon.

Michigan has signed men’s basketball coach John Beilein to a three-year contract extension that will keep him with the Wolverines through the 2018-19 season, athletic director Dave Brandon announced Wednesday. The 60-year-old Beilein will make $2.45 million a year in total compensation.

Beilein, who was hired away from West Virginia in 2007, led Michigan to the national championship game and a school record-tying 31 wins last season. The Wolverines hadn't made the NCAA Tournament in 11 years before Beilein brought them back in 2009.

A native of Burt, N.Y., Beilein is the only active collegiate coach to have achieved at least one 20-win season at four different levels: junior college, NAIA, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division I. He has taken all four Division I teams he’s coached to the NCAA Tournament, and owns a career record of 673-403.

Beilein, who replaced current Harvard coach Tommy Amaker, became the highest-paid basketball coach in Michigan history when he signed a six-year deal worth $1.3 million a season back in 2007.
