Shaq Johnson dismissed from Auburn following arrest

Johnson was recently charged and arrested for possessing marijuana.

USA TODAY Sports

Shaq Johnson was dismissed by Auburn head coach Tony Barbee on Thursday, the school announced. Johnson, who was going to be a sophomore next season, was recently arrested in Alabama and charged with marijuana possession. The arrest was the primary reason for his dismissal, according to CBS Sports.

“We hold our student-athletes to a high standard at Auburn University in the way that they conduct themselves off the court,” Barbee said in a release. “I am very disappointed in Shaq’s choices and actions, and they won’t be tolerated. This decision is not one that I take lightly, but it is in the best interest of both the program and the student-athlete.”

Johnson played in 32 games last season and averaged 5.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. He started to really play well during the month of February, setting a career high with 18 points against Ole Miss on Feb. 23. Johnson was expected to be a key contributor for an Auburn team looking to rebuild after finishing last season with a 9-23 record.

Johnson committed to Auburn as a three-star prospect out of the 2011 class. He has not announced what his next steps will be as far as his basketball career goes.
