Creighton’s Grant Gibbs granted sixth year, Doug McDermott to walk-on

Perhaps the most accomplished returning player in college basketball will be a walk-on next season.

College basketball’s only returning two-time All-American will be a walk-on in 2013-14.

Creighton received fantastic news on Tuesday when it found out that point guard Grant Gibbs, who had sustained a number of injuries earlier in his college career, had been granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA. The only issue was that the Bluejays no longer had a scholarship available for Gibbs.

The issue was quickly put to bed by head coach Greg McDermott, who announced that he would be paying the tuition for his son, two-time first team All-American Doug McDermott, this season in order to free up a scholarship for Gibbs.

“Doug is fine with that,” Greg McDermott told the Omaha World-Herald. “I texted him this morning, and no one is more excited about this than he is.”

Doug McDermott, who was the nation’s second-leading scorer last season, surprised many when he opted not to skip out of school a year early and make himself eligible for the NBA Draft. His return coupled with that of Gibbs, who led the Missouri Valley in assists in 2012-13, should make Creighton one of the preseason favorites in the first season of the new Big East Conference.
