Trae Golden will transfer to Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech lands an established guard to add to its existing core of solid young players.

USA TODAY Sports

Former Tennessee Volunteers guard Trae Golden will transfer to Georgia Tech for his senior season, according to ESPN.com's Jeff Goodman.

For more on Georgia Tech athletics, head over to From the Rumble Seat.

Golden, a Georgia native, told Goodman his father is “severely ill,” which played into his decision to take his game to the Yellow Jackets.

“I appreciate everything that Coach (Cuonzo) Martin and Tennessee did for me. I feel it’s the best move for me to go home to Atlanta so I can be close to my family and help take care of my father.”

The 6'2, 205-pound guard averaged 12.1 points, 3.9 assists and 2.9 rebounds per game last season for Tennessee before a season-ending loss to Mercer in the opening round of the NIT. That production was down from his sophomore season, though, as he averaged 13.6 points and 4.5 assists per contest that year.

The Yellow Jackets, who finished 16-15 last season, will return their top four scorers -- and five of their top six -- in 2013-14. Golden is trying to get a waiver from the NCAA so that he can be a part of that mix of players rather than being forced to sit out a year.
