P.J. Hairston arrest: All charges dropped against UNC star

All charges from the June arrest of North Carolina guard P.J. Hairston have been dropped, but the rental car Hairston was driving at the time of the arrest could affect his eligibility for next season.

All charges against North Carolina junior guard P.J. Hairston stemming from an arrest in early June have been dropped, according to Greg Barnes of Inside Carolina.

Hairston was arrested on June 5 during a license checkpoint. Hairston and two other male passengers were all charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession. During the stop, police found a bag containing 41.1 grams of marijuana, a 9-millimeter handgun and a magazine with nine rounds of ammunition.

The junior was also charged with driving without a license. However, the charges have been dismissed because the guard completed a drug assessment and was also able to provide his current driver’s license.

Despite the charges being dropped, Hairston isn’t completely out of hot water just yet. The 2013 GMC Yukon he was driving at the time of his arrest was rented in the name of Haydn Thomas for a cost of $1,261.64, which could have an effect on Hairston’s eligibility for next season.

He also has an Aug. 2 court date for a speeding ticket he received on May 13 in a 2012 Chevrolet Camaro. The Camaro was rented under the name of Catinia Farrington with the same home address as Thomas.

Hairston is currently not enrolled in summer school at North Carolina, and he’s also not practicing with the team. Head coach Roy Williams has considered suspending Hairston regardless of how things play out, but no decision has been made on that front.
