TCU’s Karviar Shepherd cleared to play by NCAA

TCU’s rebuilding hoops program received some good news about a prized recruit on Friday.

USA TODAY Sports

TCU Horned Frogs freshman big man Karviar Shepherd has been cleared to play in the 2013-14 basketball season by the NCAA, according to head coach Trent Johnson (via Stefan Stevenson of the Star-Telegram).

For more on TCU athletics, head over to Frogs O' War.

Shepherd was ruled ineligible by the NCAA earlier this month due to academic issues, which would have been a big blow to a program in the midst of rebuilding itself after missing out on the NCAA Tournament in every season since 1998.

The 6’10, 225-pound native of Dallas, was the No. 77 overall recruit in the 2013 class, according to ESPN RecruitingNation. He chose the Horned Frogs over Texas A&M, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas after a standout season at Dallas Prime Prep, a school co-founded by ex-NFL and MLB star Deion Sanders.

TCU finished 11-21 in 2012-13, its first year in the Big 12. The Horned Frogs kick off the 2013-14 season with an exhibition game against Arkansas-Fort Smith on Nov. 1 before taking on SMU in a neutral-site contest on Nov. 8.
