Cal loses leading returning scorer Justin Cobbs for 6-8 weeks

The Bears will be forced to begin their 2013-14 preseason preparation without the Pac-12’s active career assists leader.

Cal will be without leading returning scorer Justin Cobbs for 6-8 weeks after the senior point guard broke the fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot during a Pro-Am game on Monday night. The school announced the news through a press release Wednesday afternoon.

Cobbs earned second team All-Pac-12 honors in 2012-13, when he averaged 15.1 points and 4.8 assists. He is also the conference’s active career assists leader.

Cal is scheduled to begin practicing on Sept. 27, which means Cobbs will likely miss the opening two or three weeks of the preseason. Assuming his recovery goes as planned, Cobbs should be good to go by the time the Bears are ready to take the court for the first time in November.

Despite losing star guard Allen Crabbe to the NBA, Cal heads into the 2013-14 season with high-hopes of making a third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Bears upset UNLV in the second round a season ago, before falling to eventual East Region champion Syracuse in the round of 32.
