L.J. Rose eligible to play immediately at Houston

Rose transferred from Baylor to Houston over the summer to be closer to his mother, who is battling lupus.

USA TODAY Sports

L.J. Rose has received a waiver from the NCAA to play immediately with the Houston Cougars this fall, according to ESPN's Andy Katz.

Rose, who will be a sophomore in 2013-14, transferred from Baylor during the summer to be closer to his mother, who is battling lupus. The 6’4 guard is from Houston and was ranked as a top-100 prospect coming out of high school in the 2012. Most scouting services had him as a four-star recruit.

Rose played sparingly as a freshman at Baylor, averaging just 0.9 points and 1.2 assists a night. He was behind All-Conference guard Pierre Jackson, though, and did show potential whenever given extended playing time on the court.

Rose is expected to be the starting point guard for Houston next season, and will help the Cougars contend while playing their first season in the American Athletic Conference. Along with returnees TaShawn Thomas and Danuel House, the up-tempo Cougars could also be in the hunt for an NCAA Tournament bid next spring.
