Derrick Randall eligible to play immediately at Pittsburgh

Randall left Rutgers amidst the scandal involving player abuse from former coach Mike Rice.

USA TODAY Sports

Derrick Randall has been cleared to play this upcoming season with the Pitt Panthers after transferring from Rutgers back in June. Randall elected to leave Rutgers amid the player abuse scandal with former head coach Mike Rice, who was fired back in April.

Randall, a 6’8 forward who averaged 2.1 points and 1.5 rebounds per game last season as a freshman while being used sparingly off the bench, was regarded as a three-star recruit out of high school. As the Scarlet Knights struggled throughout most of the season, Randall began playing more minutes as the season wound down. He set a career-high in scoring with eight points against Marquette in early March, showing some signs of potential.

With center Steven Adams departing for the NBA and leading scorer Tray Woodall graduating, Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon should have no trouble finding minutes for the sophomore forward in 2013-2014. This winter the Panthers will play their first season in the ACC, which some believe will be the toughest conference in the country.
