Generally, when players transfer between schools they are forced to sit out one year, but there are exceptions. After playing with Maryland for three years, Howard decided to transfer near home so he could be in closer proximity to his grandmother, who had fallen very ill.
According to NBC Sports, the NCAA granted Howard’s hardship waiver request, thereby making him immediately eligible to play.
The news is a huge boon for USC coach Andy Enfield, who took over one of the younger teams in the Pac-12. The Trojans have six freshmen and four sophomores on the current roster. Howard will join senior guard J.T. Terrell to hopefully provide a bit of stability in the backcourt for the young roster.
The Trojans will need Howard to make up some of the assists they will be missing from Jio Fontan, who averaged 5.3 assists a game last season, good for second in the Pac-12. Howard averaged 3.3 points and 3.6 assists in 22.8 minutes a game for the Terrapins last year.
