McDonald’s All-American Chris Walker not enrolling at Florida for first semester

Billy Donovan won’t have his five-star freshman to start the season, but he does have enough big men to adequately cushion the blow.

USA TODAY Sports

McDonald’s All-American Chris Walker will not enroll at Florida for the fall semester and thus won’t be eligible to play for the Gators until at least December, according to a report by Gary Parrish of CBSSports.com.

Walker, a consensus top 10 recruit from out of Holes County High School in Bonifay, Fla., has spent recent months taking online classes in an attempt to meet the NCAA’s minimum requirement for freshman eligibility. Tuesday was the final day for freshmen to enroll at Florida, which started classes for its fall semester last Wednesday.

Though the loss of the 6’10 Walker is definitely a blow, the good news for Billy Donovan is that he has the frontcourt depth to handle it. The Gators return a pair of seniors - Patric Young (10.1 ppg, 6.3 rpg) and Casey Prather (6.2 ppg, 3.7 rpg) - as well as two talented transfers - Dorian Finney-Smith (Virginia Tech) and Damontre Harris (South Carolina) - who can all take care of things in the paint. Senior forward Will Yeguete (5.5 ppg, 5.8 rpg) is also working his way back from offseason knee surgery.

Despite losing the top three scorer’s from last season’s Elite 8 squad, Florida is widely-projected to begin the 2013-14 season ranked somewhere among the nation’s top 15.
