Adidas Nations 2013 results: Trey Lyles leads Team USA Blue to championship

Jahlil Okafor had 14 points for Team USA Red, but it wasn’t enough as Team USA Blue used a big third quarter to take the 2013 adidas Nations championship.

Trey Lyles scored 10 points and Team USA Blue used a big third quarter to defeat Team USA Red for the 2013 adidas Nations Championship on Monday night.

Forward Theo Pinson, a top-20 prospect committed to the North Carolina Tar Heels, led USA Blue with 15 points and Reid Travis added 14 off the bench as USA Blue turned a six-point deficit at halftime into a nine-point lead by the end of the third quarter.

Jahlil Okafor, widely-renowned as the top prospect in 2014, had 14 points and eight rebounds for USA Red. Okafor got the best of his opponent, too, holding top-10 recruit Myles Turner to just six points and four rebounds.

USA Red went into halftime with a six-point lead, largely due to the play of forward Stanley Johnson. Johnson had 15 points and eight rebounds in the first half, but the top-10 recruit from California struggled to maintain his hot streak after halftime. He still finished with game-highs of 17 points and 11 rebounds, though.

Team Africa beat Team USA 2015 Red for third place

Team Africa led by as many as 18 points in the fourth quarter and held off the Team USA 2015 Red squad en route to a 69-56 victory on Monday night at the adidas Nations tournament.

It was a slow scoring affair in the first quarter with the two teams combining for just 25 points while Team Africa trailed 14-11. Sidy Ndir took over in the second quarter, though, scoring Team Africa’s final seven points of the half on the way to a 32-27 halftime lead. Ndir led all scorers with 23 points off of 7-of-19 shooting.

Cameron Walker, who is ranked as the No. 43 prospect in the Class of 2015 by Rivals, led Team USA with 13 points while Cameron Mathews, the class’s No. 13 prospect, contributed 12 points. Neither team shot the ball particularly well, however, as each made just a shade over 37 percent from the floor.

Papa Sadia Diatte had 16 points for Team Africa, and as Jonathon Givony of Draft Express pointed out, probably increased his profile in the process. It was a three-person affair for Team Africa, though, as Nehdi Ngouma, Ndir and Diatte combined for 57 of Team Africa’s 69 points.

Givony also pointed out that Team Africa had a distinct age advantage by having a few players aged 18 or 19 while most teams are comprised of 17 and 18 year olds
