Michigan State guard Gary Harris injured his right ankle over the weekend while playing a pickup game and will miss at least four weeks. He could miss as many as eight weeks, though that seems to be more on the cautious side.

More Spartans coverage: The Only Colors

Harris, who averaged 12.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game last season, is expected to be one of the go-to scoring options for Michigan State. The Spartans are expected to begin the season ranked in the top three, and Harris missing time because of injuries could really hold Tim Izzo’s squad back. Most mock drafts for 2014 have Harris going in the first round.

In addition to the ankle problem, the sophomore guard was forced to play through shoulder pain last season.

The official start of team practice is about four weeks away, with the start of non-conference play beginning in early November. It would seem Harris’ ankle should be fully recovered once practice rolls around, and there’s very little chance he misses any games, assuming there are no setbacks in his recovery.
