Justin Cobbs injury: Cal guard expects full recovery for season opener

The senior guard broke his foot in mid-August but plans on being ready by Nov. 8.

Justin Cobbs, senior guard for the California Golden Bears, expects to be fully healed from a broken foot in time for the start of the season, CBS Sports reported on Monday.

Cobbs was one of the big reasons the Bears ended their season as one of the surprises in the Pac-12. They pieced together a seven-game win streak towards the end of the season and put themselves in the NCAA Tournament conversation. They went on to justify the berth with an upset over the No. 5 seed UNLV Runnin' Rebels.

With Cal's leading scorer Allen Crabbe off to the NBA, Cobbs is the sole leader in the Bears' backcourt. He fractured his fifth metatarsal in his right foot in mid-August and had surgery to put a screw in to stabilize the broken bone.

Practice begins for the Bears on Sept. 27, and although Cobbs isn’t fully healed yet, he expects to be ready to go for the season opener on Nov. 8 against Coppin State.

“I feel really good about it. I’m not worried,” he said. “Just stay healthy and stay focused. I should be back 100 percent.”

Cobbs transferred from Minnesota to Cal after his freshman year and immediately became a starter in the Bears’ backcourt. He averaged 15.1 points and 4.8 assists per game last season.
