Akron gives coach Keith Dambrot extension through 2022-23 season

The 2022-23 season seems like quite a while from now, but it’s really just a decade away.

USA TODAY Sports

The Akron Zips extended head coach Keith Dambrot's already lengthy contract, giving it an extra year to keep the Akron graduate on the Zips' sideline through the 2022-23 season, the school announced Monday.

Last year was a banner year for Akron: It made its first-ever Associated Press Top-25 Poll and qualified for its third NCAA tournament in the last five seasons. The Zips have made the MAC tournament final in each of the last seven seasons under Dambrot, who will coach his 10th season at Akron in 2013-14.

Since moving to Division I in 1980, three of the school’s four all-time NCAA tournament appearances have come under Dambrot.

Dambrot, a 54-year-old Akron native, was the coach at Central Michigan from 1991-93, and then spent five years as an assistant at Eastern Michigan. He spent three years as the head coach at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, two of which LeBron James was on his roster. In 2001, he became an assistant at Akron and was promoted to head coach after three seasons.
