Maryland basketball will hold Maryland Madness at Cole Field House

The Terrapins are kicking the locks off one of college basketball’s most iconic buildings to tipoff the season.

USA TODAY Sports

The Maryland Terrapins will hold the Maryland Madness season kickoff at Cole Field House on Oct. 18, returning to the legendary arena for the first time since it hosted its final game in 2002, the school announced Tuesday.

The Terrapins played in Cole Field House from 1955 until 2002, when an emotional 20-point win over the Virginia Cavaliers closed the on-campus arena in style. Since then, the university has used Cole Field House for some intramural athletics and a handful of non-athletic campus events. Men's and women's basketball, volleyball, wrestling and gymnastics all now use the Comcast Center.

Cole Field House’s capacity is listed at just under 15,000, and tickets for Maryland Madness will be free on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Among other landmark dates, Cole Field House hosted the historic 1966 national championship game in which Texas Western defeated Kentucky.
