UNLV billboard accidentally shows former coach Lon Kruger

Courtesy: Las Vegas Review-Journal

Lon Kruger left UNLV to become the head basketball coach at Oklahoma back in 2011. So why is his image still being used to sell season tickets in Vegas? Because someone screwed up massively.

Credit current head coach Dave Rice, who has taken the Rebs to the NCAA Tournament in each of his first two seasons on the job, for taking the whole thing in stride.

“I thought it was humorous,” the third-year coach said. “It’s one of those things that happens. But I’m the last person who would take himself too seriously.

“Hey, if Coach Kruger can help us sell tickets, great.”

The folks in the athletic office are feeling less forgiving.

Tina Kunzer-Murphy, UNLV’s interim athletic director, was not amused.

“To us, it’s not a laughing matter,” she said. “We think what happened was the billboard company was doing us a favor by posting the ad but our marketing people never saw it. But it’s being taken down and we hope to have a replacement with Dave and Bobby up.”

Soon-to-be Hall of Famer Jerry Tarkanian probably would have turned even more heads. And maybe sold more ticket packages.
