Arkansas beats No. 13 Kentucky on a game-winning Michael Qualls tip-dunk

The ending of Arkansas’ upset win over Kentucky was fascinating, in one good way and one weird way.

As basketball fans, we’ve seen our fair share of buzzer-beaters. Normally, they’re of the long-distance variety -- as in, the ball has to travel some distance in between the shooter’s hand and the basket. But Tuesday night, Arkansas toppled No. 13 Kentucky to get their first win of the SEC season on a monster tip dunk from Michael Qualls.

Arkansas seemed fated to win after an Alandise Harris and-one in regulation, but Andrew Harrison answered with a three-pointer at the other end to force overtime. The teams were again tied in OT, but Rashad Madden tried to untie it with a three.

He failed, but Qualls was there to answer.

A MONSTER. On a last second play, you have to defend the shot and not worry about the rebound, but, um, YOU KIND OF HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE REBOUND.

This led to a debate about the constructs of time: the shot has to get off the player’s hands before the clock hits zero, and the clock is supposed to stop when the ball leaves the net. Eventually, it was determined Kentucky had .2 seconds, and that they could try to tip the ball in. From full-court, this wasn’t going to happen. Especially not after their heave went into the scoreboard.

Laettner it wasn’t. Of course, we argue this should be worth points:

Between this and an OT loss to No. 7 Florida, the Razorbacks have made Bud Walton Arena an awful tough place to play this year.
