Creighton destroys No. 4 Villanova, sets all the records

Creighton hit its first nine three-pointers and led by as many as 40 points in the second half. It was truly one of the more impressive offensive displays you’ve ever seen in a college basketball game.

In what was one of the more impressive offensive performances in college basketball history, Creighton went on the road and blew out No. 4 Villanova, 96-68, on Monday night. That’s right ... the Bluejays beat the fourth-ranked team in the country on the road by 28 points.

Creighton made its first nine three-point attempts, taking a 30-12 lead about seven minutes into the first half. It would lead by as many as 40 points midway through the second half. The Bluejays finished the night 21-for-35 (60 percent) from behind the arc and shot 57 percent overall. Their 21 three-pointers set a new Big East record.

Ethan Wragge tied Kyle Korver's school record with nine three-pointers, scoring all 27 of his points on the deep ball. Doug McDermott, who may just win the Wooden Award this year as the best player in college basketball, only had 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Jahenns Manigat dropped 19 points. And if all of this wasn't impressive enough, Creighton did it without Grant Gibbs.

Some of college basketball’s national writers weighed in on the beatdown:

The win over Villanova was Creighton’s first victory over a top-five team since 1970.

Creighton came into Monday with the No. 1 offense in the country, according to Kenpom.com. If its offensive outburst against the Wildcats was any indication, it would seem it does indeed have the best offense in college basketball.
