Georgetown center Joshua Smith ruled academically ineligible, out for season
The Hoyas big man, after working his way back from injury, will miss the rest of the year.

Smith, a 6’10, 350-pound junior transfer from UCLA, averaged 11 points and 3.5 rebounds in 19.9 minutes per game. He sat out the 2013 spring semester after transferring from UCLA, but was granted a waiver by the NCAA to play this fall. Georgetown head coach John Thompson III announced Friday before the Hoyas’ game against Creighton that Smith had been ruled ineligible.

“Josh Smith is ineligible for the remainder of the year because of academics,” Thompson said in a statement. “It’s disappointing. A lot of what we did was geared toward his presence.”
The Hoyas are 11-7 and on the outside of the NCAA Tournament picture. The program prides itself on developing centers, but behind Smith and after the Hoyas dismissed forward Greg Whittington in November, the cupboard is mighty bare. Nate Lubick and Mikael Hopkins, who have produced effectively, will get more minutes, but behind them, there aren't a lot of options for the Hoyas in what is looking more and more like a lost season.
