Preseason first team Associated Press All-American Mitch McGary will likely miss the remainder of the 2013-14 season after having to undergo lower back surgery, this according to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman.
Report: Michigan’s Mitch McGary likely out for the season
Michigan’s chances of making a return trip to the Final Four took a huge hit on Friday.

McGary has appeared in just eight games for Michigan this season, posting averages of 9.5 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. He was a monster for the Wolverines during their run to the 2013 national championship game, averaging 14.3 points and 10.8 boards in six NCAA Tournament contests.
“We want Mitch to be 100 percent healthy again,” Michigan head coach John Beilein said earlier this week. “He has worked very hard over the last few months and during his earlier rehab. He was making progress in practice and games; however, lately he began to experience the same pain he had when we held him out of preseason practice this fall. Our first priority is Mitch’s overall health even though I am certain he would rather be back on the court right now.”
Michigan began the 2013-14 season ranked in the top 10 of both major polls, but found itself unranked after dropping four of their first 10 games. The Wolverines opened Big Ten play with a 63-60 victory over Minnesota on Thursday.
