You know Army, Navy, and Air Force have basketball teams, but if you turned on ESPNU today, this might be a weird shock:
Wait, Coast Guard Academy basketball?
Yes, ESPN’s tip-off classic at a Coast Guard base features a game from the Division III United States Coast Guard Academy.
The smallest of America’s five service academies -- yes, smaller even than the United States Merchant Marine Academy -- the Coast Guard’s college is in New London, Connecticut.
For the third-straight year, ESPN is having a tip-off game at an armed forces base around the world -- in past they’d gone to Germany and South Korea, tonight, Louisville and Minnesota will play at Air Station Borinquen in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. Since that’s a Coast Guard base, somebody figured it’d be neat to let the Coast Guard’s basketball team play a “home” game beforehand, so the Bears are taking on Hampden-Sydney College in the first nationally televised college basketball game of the year. The Bears will play one game against a Division I opponent this year -- Army, on Dec. 28.
Everybody got cool warmups!
