Stanford women snap No. 1 UConn’s 47-game winning streak

For the second time in four years, the Stanford women’s basketball team snapped a Connecticut win streak that had spanned across multiple seasons.

The UConn women’s basketball team saw its 47-game winning steak snapped by the same team and in the same place where the Huskies’ record 90-game winning streak died almost four years ago.

No. 6 Stanford got 24 points from sophomore Lili Thompson and a clutch three from Amber Orrange in the closing seconds of regulation to send the game into overtime. In the extra frame, the Cardinal outscored the top-ranked Huskies 11-9 to pull off the 88-86 upset.

The winning streak had been the second-longest in program history for UConn, which dominated the rest of the country on its way to a perfect 40-0 campaign and its second consecutive national championship last season.

The win also trimmed UConn’s all-time advantage in the pseudo rivalry series with Stanford to 10-7. The two teams have met in the Final Four four times since 2008, including in the 2010 national championship game and in last year’s national semifinals.

The fans inside Maples Pavilion celebrated appropriately.
