Kentucky never needed to validate the merit of the ridiculous hypotheticals that frame their season. It doesn’t really matter if the Wildcats look good enough to go undefeated, at least not in November. It doesn’t make much of a difference whether or not they could beat the worst team in the NBA. What’s important just two weeks into a new college basketball season is Kentucky has done the only thing it’s really been capable of doing up to this point, and that’s leave little doubt they currently look like the best team in America.
College basketball scores: Kentucky’s defense is ridiculous right now
Also featuring the best highlights of the weekend and the first real court storming of the season.
Boston University only trailed the No. 1 Wildcats by three points with about 13 minutes to go Friday night, but Kentucky still won by 24. That’s been the main theme behind Kentucky’s 5-0 start: they’re not just winning, they’re blowing teams out by an average of 34.6 points per game. Montana State had to find out the hard away Saturday.
To be fair: how could any team be expected to overcome this type of size difference?

Sure, Montana State was never going to be much of a test for Kentucky, but the shear spectacle of the Wildcats’ domination counted for something. The Bobcats scored only 28 points, the lowest total for a Kentucky opponent in the shot-clock era. They finished the game shooting below 20 percent from the floor. It was the second time this season Kentucky had as many blocks (this time: 12) as the number of field goals made by their opponent.
Montana State coach Brian Fish sounded like a man who was aware of what he was going up against:
“It’s hard to simulate their length and understand that,” said Montana State’s first-year coach Brian Fish.
Fish added: “He (Kentucky coach John Calipari) had those guys playing really hard. You feel helpless because you don’t know what to attack.”
“Helpless” is a good way to describe how opposing teams must feel going against Kentucky’s defense right now. It’s No. 1 in the country, according to Ken Pom, thanks to the ability to force turnovers and challenge everything inside the arc. Get used to seeing stats like this:
When UK set an NCAA record with 344 blocks in 2012, it averaged 8.6 per game. So far this season, the Cats are averaging an absurd 9.8.
— Kyle Tucker (@KyleTucker_CJ) November 24, 2014 Or let me put it to you this way: Kentucky has almost blocked as many two-point tries (45) as opponents have made this season (49).
— Kyle Tucker (@KyleTucker_CJ) November 24, 2014 As much fun as it is to see Kentucky stomp bottom feeders from the Big Sky, the schedule is about to get real. Kentucky hosts a currently-undefeated Providence team Sunday and faces Texas Dec. 5. It's a bummer the Longhorns will be without point guard Isaiah Taylor as he recovers from a broken wrist, but Texas is still one of the few teams in the country with enough size to legitimately challenge the Wildcats. Before December ends, Kentucky will also have played North Carolina, UCLA and Louisville.
If the Wildcats are still undefeated by the time conference play starts, they will have earned it. Until then, just pray for UT-Arlington Tuesday. Recent events suggest that one is going to get ugly.
Upsets of the weekend
We had our first real court storming of the season Saturday when Rhode Island knocked off No. 21 Nebraska in overtime, 66-62. Video via Terrence Payne.
It was the first time the Rams had beaten a ranked opponent since 1998. Shout-out to Lamar Odom:

— basketrip (@basketrip) February 25, 2014 The other big upset of the weekend came on Sunday when West Virginia tripped up UConn 78-68 behind 21 points from star guard Juwan Staten. He's pretty good:
Juwan Staten is the pivot master. https://t.co/lKu3K4mL4i

4. Ryan Boatright stuffs West Virginia
Ryan Boatright doesn’t get blocks very often, but when he does they’re usually pretty awesome.
3. J.P. Tokoto can jump
This is what J.P. Tokoto does.
2. Larry Nance flys again
Not bad for a guy who tore his ACL in February.
1. Justise Winslow jumped over a guy
Winslow has been amazing thus far. Duke’s a one-and-done school now.
