Ranked teams sometimes lose at home to unranked teams from lesser conferences. Happens all the time. Ranked teams don’t often lose by 28 to unranked teams from lesser conferences. But that’s what happened Friday night in Coral Gables when Eastern Kentucky whipped No. 18 Miami, 72-44.
Eastern Kentucky wallops No. 18 Miami, 72-44
EKU didn’t just go into Miami and knock off a ranked Hurricanes team -- they won by nearly 30.

The Colonels shot the lights out, drilling 14-of-26 three-point attempts. Tommy Knipp shot 5-of-9 from deep, Isaac McGlone hit all four of his attempts, and Corey Walden led the way with 18 points, including a pair of shots in garbage time that looked like they came from 30 feet out.
Meanwhile, Miami hit just 12 shots total. (Yes, they hit less shots than EKU hit three-pointers.) Angel Rodriguez, reportedly under the weather, went 0-for-6 from the field and finished with just one point.
EKU aren’t exactly world-beaters. They just loss to East Tennessee State and had zero wins against teams in the top 310 slots of Ken Pomeroy’s rankings. So this is a tad embarrassing for the Hurricanes. We salute them for their win tonight, their evil Colonel Sanders mascot and Eric Stutz’s headband.
