Grambling State beat Alcorn State, a Division I team, in a basketball game

Grambling State is, and has been for some time, the worst basketball team in Division I. Last year, the Tigers went 0-28, a difficult achievement, made even more incredible by the fact that 27 of their losses were by 10 points or more. (Their season finale was an eight-point loss.)

This year, they started out 1-18, but the one win came against Central Baptist, a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association. And that was only by eight points. (They lost their other game against a non-Division I team, 55-54, to Lyon.

But they’d begun creeping closer. In January, the Tigers lost to Texas Southern by just two, followed by a one-point loss to Prairie View A&M.

Monday night, something miraculous happened: the Tigers played Alcorn State, who are a very bad team -- the 300th best out of 351, per Ken Pomeroy’s ratings -- but that still left them 51 slots higher than Grambling.

The Tigers shot out of their minds, hitting 12 of 20 from three. And behind 19 points from A’Torri Shine and 18 from Terry Rose, the Tigers won their first game against a Division I team since March 3, 2012. (That’s 710 days and 45 games ago.)

Congratulations to the Tigers, who are now on a winning streak. Southern Utah and Cornell still have yet to win games against D-I competition on the year (although neither of them will end the year without a victory, due to wins against Southwestern Arizona and Oberlin, respectively.)
