Duke, North Carolina postpone game due to bad weather

Snowfall has created dangerous conditions in Chapel Hill, N.C., and officials have decided to cancel the rivalry game.

The highly anticipated rivalry game between the Duke Blue Devils and North Carolina Tar Heels has been postponed because of dangerous weather conditions on Wednesday.

WTVD reporter Mark Armstrong reports that North Carolina has officially called off the game, though a make-up date has not been decided upon. UNC coach Roy Williams told students that the game would be played at the Smith Center by the end of the season, but not on Wednesday or Thursday.

UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham earlier told the Raleigh News & Observer that a game would take place if both teams, the game officials and game operations staff could arrive safely.

“The (ACC) policy is to try to get the game in, and if you can get your game day personnel and the teams there safely, they encourage you to play the game,” Cunningham said in a phone interview.

Duke didn’t take the eight mile trek to Chapel Hill, N.C., because its bus didn’t make it to the Durham campus to pick the team up, according to the News & Observer’s Laura Keeley.

As talks progressed throughout the afternoon and early evening, it also became clear that the schools did not want to endanger fans. A winter storm made driving conditions dangerous, and tweets throughout the day showed some nearby roadways cluttered with abandoned vehicles.

North Carolina entered the home game having won six of its last seven following a 0-3 start in conference play. No. 8 Duke, meanwhile, has won seven of eight with the only loss therein coming against a now-No. 1 Syracuse Orange squad.
