College basketball rankings: Syracuse retains top spot after a week of beating buzzers

Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

Syracuse retained its top spot in the Associated Press top 25, and you are not surprised. You likely already know that the Orange topped Pitt on Wednesday with a Tyler Ennis buzzer-beating 35-footer, and then they topped North Carolina State on Saturday when this happened with about seven seconds left to play.

Cusegoahead

Arizona lost for the second time this season and it dropped accordingly, to fourth in both the AP and coaches’ polls. Florida jumped the Wildcats in the rankings with its big week, winning perhaps the two toughest road games in the SEC: at Tennessee on Tuesday and at Kentucky on Saturday. It was just the third time in 84 home games John Calipari has lost at Rupp Arena as the Wildcats’ coach.

Going back a few moments -- a few paragraphs, as it were -- to Pitt: the Panthers have spent all season earning the good graces of the pollsters, and a pair of losses this week have them right back out of the polls. Pitt was No. 25 in the AP’s poll last week and No. 23 according to the coaches; following Ennis’ winner on Wednesday and a 75-71 loss to North Carolina on Saturday, the Panthers are right back outside both rankings.

Here’s the AP top 25:

And here’s the coaches’ poll. Wichita State was already No. 2 in last week’s poll, so Arizona’s fall was one spot less harsh.
