Keith Appling injury: Michigan State PG may miss rest of regular season with hurt wrist

The Spartans’ outlook is getting grimmer and grimmer.

Michigan State point guard Keith Appling may rest for the balance of the Spartans' regular-season schedule in hopes his right wrist will be ready for postseason play, Tom Izzo announced at a news conference Monday.

The No. 13 Spartans' senior point guard had missed three games in a row before logging 19 minutes in Sunday's 60-51 loss to the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He was 1-for-2 from the field in the game.

With Sunday's loss, Michigan State dropped to 21-5. However, the Spartans are Big Ten co-leaders, sharing a 10-3 conference record with the Michigan Wolverines.

Travis Trice has filled in as Michigan State's starting point guard, and he's played well. But the team has been at its best when Appling has been at his best as well. His 22 points, eight assists and eight rebounds set the tone in the Spartans' Nov. 12 neutral-site win over the Kentucky Wildcats.

The Spartans have five games left in the regular season, including a trip Sunday to play against Michigan in Ann Arbor that will go a long way in deciding the Big Ten’s regular-season champion.
