Boston College vs. No. 1 Syracuse final score: Eagles hand Orange first loss of season

Get ready for a new No. 1 next week after Syracuse went down Wednesday night.

The nation's top-ranked team is no longer unbeaten after the Boston College Eagles stunned the Syracuse Orange in overtime, 62-59, on Wednesday night. Before pulling off of the biggest upsets of the college basketball season, the Eagles entered the Carrier Dome with just two wins over the past two months and six wins overall.

Both teams struggled offensively from the beginning. Syracuse didn’t hit its first field goal until over five minutes into the first half and neither team broke double-digits until over 10 minutes into the game. It was an ugly, defensive-minded contest, and the Orange needed a 7-0 run in the final two-plus minutes to take an eight-point lead into halftime.

Things only got better early in the second half for Syracuse, which expanded its lead to 13 points before the Eagles started making their rally. Going on a 17-4 run, Boston College finally went ahead with about seven minutes remaining and kept the game close thereafter.

Olivier Hanlan scored 20 points on 6-of-13 shooting for Boston College. Ryan Anderson added nine points, 14 rebounds and four assists.

C.J. Fair led Syracuse with 20 points on 7-of-23 shooting and 11 rebounds. Jerami Grant (11 points, four steals) and Tyler Ennis (14 points, eight rebounds, six assists) also put up good numbers.

With 'Cuse going down, the Wichita State Shockers -- the nation's final unbeaten team -- seem destined to take over at No. 1.
