Road to the Title
Purdue couldn't contain the Spartans in transition, which led to dozens of open looks Tom Izzo's team. Travis Trice went 4-for-6 and Adreian Payne 4-for-8 from behind the three-point line, demoralizing a mediocre Boilermaker team. Payne finished with 23.
Kendall Stephens and Ronnie Johnson led the offense for Purdue, scoring 19 and 17 points, respectively. The Boilermakers hit a fair number of their threes as well, hitting seven in 14 attempts.
Michigan State carries some momentum into Ann Arbor for Sunday’s game against Michigan. The Michigan teams are 1-2 in the Big Ten, with State leading by a half-game.
North Carolina 74, No. 5 Duke 66
The Tar Heels put on a defensive clinic in the second half, rallying from 11 down to beat their blood rivals. Duke went more than eight minutes in the second half without a field goal, falling on the road for the fourth time this season. Meanwhile, Marcus Paige and Leslie McDonald carried UNC back, combining for 23 points in the second half. Paige sealed the deal with this fearless drive on Rodney Hood:
McDonald finished with 21, while Paige overcame a scoreless first half to finish with 13. Jabari Parker had a double-double for Duke, making him the first Blue Devil freshman to record that feat against North Carolina since Kyle Singler in 2008.
The teams will meet again on Mar. 8 to finish out the ACC regular season, this time at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
BYU 73, No. 25 Gonzaga 65
Bracketology
Matt Carlino scored 15 points to lead the BYU Cougars to a win over the Gonzaga Bulldogs in a battle of the top two teams in the West Coast Conference. Eric Mika added 13 points and nine rebounds for BYU (19-10, 11-5 in WCC play), who strengthened its NCAA Tournament resume with the win.
BYU improved to 13-1 at home on the season, and picked up their first win over a ranked team since beating Gonzaga on Feb. 2, 2012.
Sam Dower led Gonzaga (23-5, 13-2) with 14 points and eight rebounds in defeat. Kevin Pangos added 13 points, but on just 3-for-9 shooting.
No. 21 Connecticut 68, Temple 55
Shabazz Napier flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 17 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists against the Owls as the Huskies rolled. UConn held Temple under 34 percent shooting, blocking six of their field goal attempts. Ryan Boatright chipped in 14 points, while as a group Connecticut's guards scored 43 of the Huskies' 68 points.
The Huskies have won four straight, but are still fourth in the American Athletic Conference. Cincinnati, at 13-1, leads the way in the AAC.
No. 22 Memphis 64, Rutgers 59
The Tigers held off a late charge from Rutgers, earning their ninth win in conference play. Michael Dixon Jr. scored 15 off the bench for Memphis, hitting four of his seven shot attempts. Kadeem Jack scored a game-high 22 for the Scarlet Knights, but the rest of the team shot just 30 percent from the field.
Memphis, just like UConn, improves to 9-4 but still trails in the conference. With five games remaining, both teams trail the Bearcats by 3.5 games.
