College basketball scores: UMass wins over VCU, Iona nearly blows big lead

Despite no Top 25 games, there were still some fun match ups to watch last night in college hoops.

Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

Fridays aren’t the liveliest of nights in the college basketball world. The big game of the night was VCU losing a third game in its last four against Massachusetts.

Late steal seals UMass victory over VCU, 80-75

Chaz Williams made every important play late for the Minutemen to allow them to come up with the victory over VCU. He hit four free throws down the stretch, and made the biggest defensive play of the game. Down, 78-75, the Rams held the ball with less than 20 seconds left. Briante Weber drove right, but Williams weaseled his way around Weber and picked his pocket. He would be fouled and hit the free throws to bring the game to its final margin.

Iona loses big lead, still comes out on top over Rider, 80-77

A.J. English suffered through a tough night shooting, going 5-of-16 from the field, but made up for it with nine points from the line. His Gaels held a 14-point lead with under eight minutes to go, but the Broncos fought back. Within one with 14 seconds left, Rider was forced to foul. English hit his free throws and Anthony Myles missed a three on the final Rider possession.

Both teams empty benches to finish Florida Gulf Coast 75-61 win over Mercer

Nothing would go in all night for Mercer. Fifteen (out of 20) missed threes, a 64 percent rate at the foul line isn’t terrible but is well below its average of 73 percent for the season. 34 percent from the field is pretty bad as well. Florida Gulf Coast had three players in double figures, led by Brett Comer’s 15 points.
