NBA Draft 2014: Joel Embiid ‘strongly considering’ staying in school

The Jayhawks’ big man could be the top overall pick if he takes the leap to the next level.

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Amid all the conversation surrounding one of the deepest and most talented drafts in recent memory, another player has expressed interest in returning to the college ranks following his freshman year. This time it's Kansas center Joel Embiid, Jeff Goodman of ESPN reports.

Embiid said on Tuesday he wasn't sure he was ready to make the leap to the next level despite widespread belief that he would be a top-three pick in the upcoming NBA Draft in June should he decide to bolt college. The Kansas center is the No. 1 overall player on the SB Nation big board.

This would obviously put a wrinkle in the game plan for league general managers who will be drafting at the top of the lottery, even with all the highly coveted players that will declare for the draft; and there’s obviously plenty of time remaining until a decision must be made.

Embiid is averaging 11.2 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.7 blocks as a freshman, which isn’t bad for a guy who thought about redshirting prior to the season, according to the report.
