Virginia Tech fired head coach James Johnson on Monday afternoon after two disappointing seasons in Blacksburg.
James Johnson fired as Virginia Tech men’s basketball coach
Johnson’s teams went 22-41 during his two seasons with the Hokies.

Johnson was hired by the Hokies in March 2012 to replace Seth Greenberg. His first season did not go well as Virginia Tech posted a 13-19 record, including a 4-14 mark against the ACC. This past season was even worse for Johnson as the team won just nine games and went 2-16 in conference play.
“I want to thank Coach Johnson for his dedication and hard work for our university and our basketball program over the past seven years,” athletic director Whit Babcock said in a statement. “A change of this significance affects many people and is never taken lightly, but I felt a change and a new direction was necessary for the long term, best interest of our department.”
Virginia Tech was one of the worst offensive teams in the country this year, ranking 331st in scoring average and 326th in field goal percentage. They lost 17 of their final 18 contests, and it seemed the team had kind of lost interest over the final month of the season.
Johnson was an assistant coach at Virginia Tech from 2007-12. He also spent time as an assistant at George Mason and Penn State.
