NCAA Tournament results 2014: Tennessee, Cal Poly advance to 2nd Round

The Volunteers forced overtime with Iowa, distancing themselves from the Hawkeyes in the extra period. Tennessee will play UMass, while upstart Cal Poly plays Wichita State.

Tennessee thrived in overtime to knock Iowa out of the NCAA Tournament, 78-65. The Volunteers trailed for much of the game, but wore down the Hawkeyes deeper into the game.

A Jarnell Stokes free throw extended Tennessee's lead to two with 25 seconds remaining, but Roy Devyn Marble hit a contested jumper with 18 seconds to play to send the game into overtime.

Stokes led the way for Tennessee in the game, notching a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Leading scorer Jordan McRae finished with 20 points on 6-15 shooting.

Iowa got a surprisingly-productive game from big man Adam Woodbury, who finished with a career-high 16 points. Marble, despite the brief heroics, scored just seven points in the game on 3-15 shooting

Tennessee will play Massachusetts Friday at 2:45 p.m. ET.

Cal Poly 81, Texas Southern 69

The Mustangs picked a great day to have their best shooting game of the season. Cal Poly hit 57 percent of their shots, building 12-point halftime lead that Joe Callero's team rode to victory. Aaric Murray scored 38 for Texas Southern, but the Tigers couldn't guard the Mustangs in the half court.

Chris Eversley finished with 19 point and nine rebounds for Cal Poly, while Dave Nwaba notched 17 and five. The Mustangs are the most surprising team in the NCAA Tournament, finishing the Big West season with a 6-10 record. The San Luis Obispo-based university finished the regular season on a three-game skid, but has won four straight in post-season play.

Cal Poly will play No. 1 Wichita State Friday night at 7:10 p.m. ET.
