CBI bracket results 2014: Penn State, Texas A&M move on to 2nd round

Illinois State, Radford, Old Dominion, Fresno State and Princeton are your other winners.

Penn State 69, Hampton 65

Penn State was one of the few teams to enter postseason play with a losing record, but it looks like the Nittany Lions are on track to soon rectify that. One more win will bring them up to a .500 record after a victory over Hampton that saw Penn State hold off a second-half comeback. D.J. Newbill was the leading scorer for the Nittany Lions, putting up 19 points in the victory.

Old Dominion 72, South Dakota State 65

Old Dominion was another sub-.500 team entering CBI play, but with an upset victory over South Dakota State, the Monarchs now stand at 17-17 on the year. Dimitri Batten led the way for Old Dominion with 18 points, while Ambrose Mosley provided 16 points and six rebounds off the bench.

Princeton 56, Tulane 55

The CBI still has an Ivy League representative, as Princeton survived a second-half comeback from the Green Wave to emerge victorious in Louisiana. Hans Brase scored 16 points for the Tigers, but Tulane’s Jonathan Stark scored a game-high 20 in a losing effort.

Texas A&M 59, Wyoming 43

Back to some power conference team action, the Aggies eased to a victory over the Cowboys, with three different players scoring in double digits. Texas A&M’s defensive effort was especially impressive, as it held Wyoming to just 29.8 percent shooting from the floor.

Illinois State 77, Morehead State 67

Four Redbirds scored in double-digits as Illinois State had little trouble with the visiting Eagles. Leading the way were guards Daishon Knight and Bobby Hunter, who scored 18 and 16 points, respectively. The biggest difference came at the free throw line, as Illinois State hit 29-of-40 attempts from the charity stripe, while Morehead State was 13-of-21.

Fresno State 61, UTEP 56

Cezar Guerrero and Marvelle Harris combined for 33 points, as Fresno State was able to come from behind to beat UTEP on its own court. The Bulldogs hit eight three pointers on the night and shot a full five percentage points better than their opponents from the floor.

Radford 96, Oregon State 92

Craig Robinson's Oregon State team got off to a hot start this season, beating Maryland in College Park, but were unable to turn that into postseason success without star forward Devon Collier. Roberto Nelson, Hallice Cook and Eric Moreland each scored more than 20 points, but Radford had three 20-point scorers, as well (along with an incredible 13-of-24 mark from three-point range).
