Marquette is reportedly interested in former UCLA coach Ben Howland for its head coaching vacancy and has reached out to him about the job. Howland is “extremely interested” in the opening, according to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman.

The Golden Eagles are currently looking to replace Buzz Williams, who abruptly left for Virginia Tech on Friday. Howland has not been shy about wanting another chance on the sidelines after being fired at UCLA following the 2013 season, and it seems the two parties share a strong mutual interest.
Howland, 56, is one of the most accomplished coaches available. He led UCLA to the Final Four in three straight years from 2006-2008. Prior to his firing last March, Howland coached the Bruins to the Pac-12 regular season title and an NCAA Tournament berth before losing in the Second Round. He went 230-105 over 10 years in Westwood and is two wins shy of 400 career victories.
Prior to coaching at UCLA, Howland had successful tenures at Northern Arizona and Pittsburgh. After winning just 16 games combined in his first two seasons at NAU, he won 21 games each year from 1997 to 1999 with the Lumberjacks. He then reached back-to-back Sweet 16s with Pittsburgh in 2002 and 2003 before heading to UCLA.
