March Madness scores: DeAndre Kane’s game-winner propels Iowa State over UNC, 85-83
Kane drove the lane with the score tied 83-83 and somehow made a layup over two defenders, sending the Cyclones to their first Sweet 16 since 2000.
DeAndre Kane's game-winning layup with 1.6 seconds on the clock propelled Iowa State to the Sweet 16 with a stunning 85-83 comeback win over North Carolina.
Iowa State once led 60-56 midway through the half, but a 14-2 run gave the Tar Heels an eight-point lead with 6:29 to go. The Cyclones refused to go away, though, and an 8-0 run capped off by an and-one layup from Melvin Ejim tied the score at 76-76 with 2:04 remaining.
With less than a minute to go, Marcus Paige drove the lane and lost control of the ball. Ejim found DeAndre Kane streaking down the floor for an easy layup to push Iowa State up by two. On the ensuing possession, James Michael McAdoo was fouled while driving to the rim. He sunk both free throws to tie the score at 83-83. Kane then attacked the rim for the game-winning layup.
The Tar Heels would have had one final chance to send up a prayer from halfcourt, but awful clock management resulted in the referees calling the game after the clock did not immediately start upon inbounds of the ball.
In a tournament that has delivered time and time again, it was an instant-classic from San Antonio. This will be Iowa State’s first Sweet 16 appearance in 14 years.
Kane single-handedly kept Iowa State alive in the final few minutes. He finished with 24 points on 9-of-18 shooting, brought down 10 rebounds and dished out seven assists. Ejim had 19 points and four boards, while Dustin Hogue chipped in with 14 and seven.
Kennedy Meeks was the star for UNC, recording a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. ISU had no answer for his size down low. Marcus Paige led the Tar Heels with 19 points, though he also turned the ball over four times. Leslie McDonald had 18 points and hit four three-pointers.
Iowa State will take on Connecticut in the Sweet 16 on Friday.
