Wichita State wins 2014 Missouri Valley Conference basketball tournament: Shockers beat Indiana State, 83-69

Wichita preserves its perfect mark, the first team to enter the NCAA Tournament undefeated since UNLV in 1991.

Wichita State continued its unbeaten streak on Sunday, defeating Indiana State for the third time this season to win the the MVC Tournament, 83-69. The Shockers, 34-0 will receive the most unnecessary automatic bid in the history of March Madness.

Fred Van Vleet was instrumental in the win, finishing with 22 points and five assists. The sophomore point guard shot 4-of-6 from three, and scored 20 points in the second half alone. Tekele Cotton added 20, including four threes of his own.

For Indiana State, they have to be bummed, losing three times to the top team in their conference when even one win would have turned the Sycamores into a national story. Manny Arop finished his season by scoring 18 points.

Wichita’s win is good news for teams hoping for an at-large bid, as the Shockers will receive the MVC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. No Missouri Valley team is expected to receive an at-large bid.
