Marquette to hire Duke’s Steve Wojciechowski as head coach, per report

The longtime Coach K disciple will take over for the departed Buzz Williams at Marquette.

Marquette will hire Duke associate head coach Steve Wojciechowski to be its next head coach, according to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman.

The Marquette head coaching job surprisingly opened up when Buzz Williams bolted for Virginia Tech two weeks ago. The Golden Eagles struggled this season amid high expectations, going 17-15 overall and 9-9 in the new Big East, missing both the NCAA Tournament and the NIT in the process.

Wojciechowski comes to Marquette after a long tenure at Duke. The 37-year-old played at Duke for four years before going undrafted in the 1998 NBA Draft. After one season playing overseas, he returned to Duke as an intern.

Wojciechowski’s coaching career began in 1999 when Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski hired him as an assistant. Wojciechowski was promoted to associate head coach in 2008, and he had a major hand in recruiting some of the elite players that have attended Duke over the years.

Wojciechowski won national championships in 2001 and 2010 as a part of Krzyzewski’s staff.

Marquette also reached out to former UCLA head coach Ben Howland, VCU head coach Shaka Smart and Tennessee head coach Cuonzo Martin among others before choosing Wojciechowski.
